What does machine safety mean?

Machine safety This encompasses all measures taken to minimize or completely eliminate hazards posed by machinery. This includes the physical and psychological safety of employees, protection against damage to machinery and products, and compliance with legal requirements.

The basis for machine safety is standards such as the EN ISO 12100, which regulates the risk assessment of machinery and the effective planning of protective devices, and the ISO/TR 14121, which serves as a guideline for documenting risk assessments. The aim of these standards is to ensure the safe operation of machinery by Hazards identified, risks assessed, and appropriate protective measures implemented. Manufacturers must design and build their machines in accordance with the EC Machinery Directive.

Notice: On January 20, 2027, the EC Machinery Directive (MD) will be replaced by the EU Machinery Regulation (MVO). The MVO expands upon and clarifies the content of the current, still valid MD.

The Machinery Directive lists potential hazards when using machines Various types of hazards arise. Typical hazards include, for example, mechanical risks such as crushing or cutting injuries, electrical hazards from short circuits, and physical strain when operating machinery. These risks can be significantly reduced through systematic analysis and planning.

Machine safety expert – our services at a glance

As Machine safety expert Cobot Safety offers companies a comprehensive range of services related to safe, standards-compliant, and efficient machines. We support you in reliably implementing legal requirements and specifically improving existing safety standards.

Whether Risk assessment, Conformity assessment or the development of suitable Security concepts – as an experienced Machine safety expert We deliver practical solutions that effectively combine safety and cost-effectiveness. This ensures that your machines not only comply with applicable regulations but are also efficient and future-proof in operation.

Risk assessment

A risk assessment, as required in standard conformity assessment procedures, is a product-accompanying process in which all hazards associated with a machine are analyzed, considered, and evaluated. If the resulting risk is too high and unacceptable, risk reduction measures must be derived. We conduct such a risk assessment for you according to EN ISO 12100 and document it according to ISO/TR 14121.

Declaration of Conformity

Every machine placed on the market in the European Union requires a CE marking as well as a manufacturer's declaration that this machine complies with all applicable EU directives and regulations. As experts in machine safety, we support you with the conformity assessment, the preparation of the necessary documentation, and the issuance of a legally valid declaration of conformity.

Security concepts

Are you planning the development and construction of a new machine but unsure about its safety implementation? We would be happy to advise you and work with you to create an ideal safety concept so that your machine meets all legal requirements regarding safety and health protection.

Force and pressure measurements

Machines are considered dangerous until proven otherwise by sound evidence. This is particularly important to consider in collaborative robot applications. With precise Force and pressure measurements We support you in demonstrating the safety of your collaborative robot application. These measurements are absolutely necessary to provide precise proof that the application in question is safe.

Training courses & lectures

Our managing director, Andreas Schunkert, is an internationally recognized expert in the field of machine safety, robotics and cobotics and is available to you as a speaker and facilitator of workshops and seminars on complex topics such as machine safety, functional safety, risk assessments, safety in collaborative robotics (cobots) and trends in automation.

Creation of an operating manual

As part of the conformity assessment procedure, the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC requires that the manufacturer of a machine prepare operating instructions for its machine. These instructions are among the mandatory technical documentation for a machine and must not only be present but also meet certain content requirements.
We will create a legally compliant and detailed operating manual for you.

Why is machine safety so important for companies?

The importance of machine safety extends far beyond protecting employees. Companies benefit from safe machines in many ways:

Avoiding accidents and liability risks

Accidents can have serious consequences – from employee injuries to legal and financial damages. Well-designed machine safety minimizes these risks and ensures the protection of everyone involved. Fewer accidents and less damage also reduce your company's contributions to workers' compensation boards.

Increased productivity

Safety measures not only build trust among employees but also ensure smooth operations. Interruptions caused by accidents or malfunctions are reduced, leading to greater efficiency.

Compliance with legal regulations

Companies that manufacture or operate machinery in the EU are obligated to comply with all directives and regulations. Conformity assessment plays a central role in this process. Incorrect or incomplete documentation can have serious consequences – from fines to production shutdowns.

Our Managing Director Andreas Schunkert is available to you as EU-certified expert for machine safety to your side to ensure the safety of your systems. As a co-responsible member of all relevant standards committees, he has a a comprehensive understanding of all important standardsTrust in his extensive expertise and years of experience.
